Does Heat Control Window Film Work?

Does Heat Control Window Film Work?
Posted October 02, 2019

Anyone who has ever found themselves sitting on the couch on a sunny day knows all too well the heat-induced discomfort the sun can create. Fortunately, there is a fix: heat control window film is a cost-effective solution that helps many homeowners take back control of the temperature in their homes. While window film doesn’t allow you to turn down the sun in the same way you lower your thermostat, it can certainly keep you from overheating (while making it easier for your AC to do its job). But how does heat control window film work, specifically? And what are its benefits? Read this article to find out!

What is Heat Control Window Film?

Think about that favorite spot you use to read a book by the window or the one seat on the couch that gives you a perfect view of the television. When the sun is its warmest, you might find those comfortable spots are not quite as comfy as they are at other times of the day. Enter heat control window film. By reflecting the sun’s heat (rather than letting it pass through), heat-control window film can add comfort to your home and even reduce your energy bills. As a result, your home will feel cooler, and your air conditioner will run less. While heat control is the primary focus of window films, it is not their only advantage. These films also reduce fade damage to your home's furnishings, floors and window treatments (as well as damage to your skin) by blocking up to 99% of UV (ultraviolet) rays, and some films even reduce heat loss in winter. Given all these benefits, it’s easy to see why so many homeowners are investing in heat control window film.

How Does Heat Control Window Film Work?

As mentioned above, heat control window film can add extra comfort to your home by controlling the heat that enters through your windows. They can also serve to keep your energy bills down, both in the heat of summer and the cold of winter. So, how does heat control window film work exactly? In general terms, heat control window film serves to reflect the heat from the sun. This reduces the overall heat gain in your home. Because of this effect, the home feels cooler overall. In fact, you may find that some high-quality window films have the potential to reject up to 85% of the heat gain that would otherwise be transmitted through your clear glass windows. This means that you do not have to run your air conditioner quite as often, saving you money on your energy bills. Conversely, the same film can retain existing heat in your rooms during the cold months. This means running your heat less frequently, which also saves you money on your energy bills.

Additional Benefits of Heat Control Window Film

One of the biggest advantages of using film is that it does not obstruct your view to the outside and still allows the light in. This is a big difference from having to use blinds or drapes to keep the sun and heat out. Blinds and drapes are often effective, but they work by blocking light from entering the room. With window film, you can still enjoy the natural light without allowing the sun to heat the room. There are other advantages as well, depending on the type of film you choose. There are extensive variations when it comes to heat control window film. For example, you will likely be able to choose between a film that uses static cling versus a film that adheres right to your window. The adhesive film typically lasts longer but the static cling version gives you a bit more flexibility. You can remove it if needed and re-apply. You can also get heat control window film in different colors. The colors are subtle which adds a design element to your room without obstructing your view while effectively keeping the heat out. Colors such as a light gray or platinum can add a nice design touch to a room. In addition, there are some heat control films that will reduce the heat you lose through your windows during the colder winter months. They work by retaining the heat that already exists in your home and not allowing it to escape through the window. For this reason, heat control window film is effective the whole year through.
